Characteristics and Changes in Populations (K-4)

* Human populations include groups of individuals living in a particular location. One important characteristic of a human population is the population density - the number of individuals that live in a given space.  * The size of a human population can increase or decrease. Populations will increase unless other factors such as disease or famine decrease the population. (NSES, 1996)

The name of this well designed learning tool is The Breathing Earth. This real-time simulation displays the CO2 emissions of every country in the world, as well as their birth and deaths.  Although the CO2 emission, birth rate and death rate data used in Breathing Earth comes from reputable sources, data that measures things on such a massive scale can never be 100% accurate. Once you are at the site, scroll down for more information.

This elegant "learning tool" is called Human Numbers Through Time and was developed by Nova, the premiere science program on PBS. The program name was World in the Balance. The web site from the program has many good resources.
